Add your room length and width in feet: that number in inches is a good fixture width. A 12 by 14 ft room suits about 26 in. Over a dining table, choose a light about half to two thirds of the table length, and at least 12 in narrower than the table so nobody bumps it. Over a dining table or kitchen island, the bottom should sit 30 to 36 in above the surface. In an open room, hall or entry, leave at least 7 ft (84 in) clear underneath. For ceilings higher than 8 ft, raise it about 3 in for every extra foot of height.
