Chandelier Size Guide: How Big and How High (2026)

Alabaster linear island chandelier hanging above a dining table

Almost every chandelier mistake is a size mistake. The fixture itself is usually lovely — it's just six inches too small for the room, or hung eight inches too high, and the whole thing reads as an afterthought instead of the centerpiece it cost money to be.

The fix is two pieces of arithmetic and one height rule. Ten minutes with a tape measure will tell you exactly what to buy.

Formula One: Diameter for a Room

Add the room's length and width in feet. That number, converted to inches, is your chandelier's ideal diameter.

A 12ft × 14ft living room: 12 + 14 = 26, so you want roughly a 26" chandelier. A 10ft × 12ft bedroom wants about 22". It sounds crude and it works remarkably well — it's the rule designers actually use.

When in doubt, go bigger. An undersized chandelier is the single most common error in home lighting, and it's the one people notice without being able to name. A fixture two inches too large reads confident; two inches too small reads like a mistake.

Formula Two: Diameter Over a Dining Table

Over a table, ignore the room and measure the table. Your chandelier should be one-half to two-thirds the width of the table, and it should never be wider than the table itself — people need to stand up without meeting glass.

A 40" round table wants a 20–26" fixture. A 72" long rectangular table is better served by a linear chandelier that runs along its length rather than one round fixture stranded in the middle.

Vail seven-globe dimmable glass chandelier in a dining room with high ceilings

Vail — seven globes, built for height

Staggered glass globes give you vertical presence, which is what a double-height room needs — a flat fixture disappears when there's air above it. Dimmable, so it can go from dinner-party bright to after-dinner low.

The Height Rule

Over a dining table, the bottom of the chandelier should sit 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Closer than 30" and people knock their heads or lose eye contact across the table; higher than 36" and the light stops belonging to the table at all.

In an open room with no furniture beneath it, keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet above the floor. And for every foot of ceiling above 8ft, add about 3 inches to the fixture's height — that's how a chandelier keeps its proportions in a tall room.

Entryways and Stairwells

In a two-story foyer, hang the chandelier so it's visible and centered in the window from outside — usually with the bottom around the level of the second floor. Never lower than 7ft above the floor below.

Vireo — the foyer statement

24 lights in a gold starburst. This is a fixture for a space with air around it: a stairwell, a double-height entry, a room where the ceiling is the feature. Put it somewhere ordinary and it will overwhelm.

Rhodes round chandelier as an elegant modern ceiling fixture

Rhodes — the round-table classic

A circular fixture over a circular table is the easiest win in the room — the shapes agree and nothing has to be styled around it. Works equally well centered in a square entry hall.

Statement Shapes That Break the Rules Well

The formulas govern scale, not silhouette. Once you know your target diameter, the style is free — and an unexpected shape is often what makes a room memorable.

Gio elliptical persimmon chandelier suspended in a modern interior

Gio — elliptical, not round

An ellipse splits the difference between a round fixture and a linear one, which makes it unusually forgiving over an oval table or an awkwardly proportioned room.

Chandelier Sizing Cheat Sheet

  • Room diameter: length (ft) + width (ft) = diameter in inches.
  • Over a table: ½ to ⅔ the table's width. Never wider than the table.
  • Height over a table: 30–36" from tabletop to the bottom of the fixture.
  • Height in open space: minimum 7ft of clearance to the floor.
  • Tall ceilings: add ~3" of fixture height per foot of ceiling above 8ft.
  • Bulbs: 2700–3000K warm white, on a dimmer. A chandelier at full brightness is rarely the look you bought it for.

Chandelier FAQs

How big should a chandelier be over a 60-inch table?

Between 30" and 40" wide. At 60", a linear fixture is often the better call than a round one — it distributes light down the length of the table instead of pooling it in the center.

Can you put a chandelier in a room with 8-foot ceilings?

Yes, as long as you keep 7ft of clearance underneath. Choose a wider, flatter fixture rather than a tall tiered one — the width gives you presence that the height can't.

Should a chandelier be centered on the room or the table?

The table, always. A fixture centered on the room but off-center over the table looks like an error every time you sit down.

The Bottom Line

Add the room dimensions for the diameter, take two-thirds of the table width if there's a table, hang it 30–36" above the surface, and put it on a dimmer. Everything after that is taste — and taste is much easier to exercise once the proportions are right.
